Slavery was a way to express power or social standing in the south. They are treated very horribly and beaten. They needed workers to work for them. But the Natives would not be fit for the diseases and hard work needed. They even tried to capture some English people to work but they were so used to being pampered so they could not handle the work. They would also be able to escape, change their name and disappear not to be seen again. Then they came upon the African Americans. The perfect people. They were hard workers and never complained. their skin set them apart from the whites, and Thy had strong spirits and could work hard and long.
They were kidnapped from their houses or just plucked from the road they were walking down. Some of their leaders even promised them some of their town if they would leave them alone after that. When these pale faced people invading their land, destroying their population, and taking them to a strange land.
They were Brought back on ships that were no more than a small cabin in the bottom of the ship. The hundreds that were brought back had to share this small space. Some times the women would get to go out if they had children. The diseases were horrible. The diseases came form the 'white folks'. The Africans had not come accustomed to the diseases and many of them died.
Slavery was just the English's way of expressing power in the colonies. They did not realize back then that it was a horribly cruel thing to do. They though that because that their skin was a different color, that they were not human.
