What Role did slavery play in the south?
In the south, people supported slavery fully. They were the states that were fighting for slavery. Slaveholders was anyone who owned a slave. They would put them to work in the fields. Most slaveholders whipped their slaves. but some just bought slaves to free them.
Work for slaves in the south was pretty much the same every day. They would wake up at sunrise, no later, then they would get breakfast. If you were too slow or didn't eat fast enough, then you would go without breakfast. Then it was on to work on the fields. They worked hard until sunset. They sis not get any breaks in between working. They also did not get to eat lunch. They only had two meals, breakfast and dinner. After being in the fields all day, their work still wasn't done. They had to go to the cotton gin and pick out the seeds. They usually got home at around midnight, but their work still wasn't done. They had chores to do. They had to take care of the animals and clean the house. Then they cooked and ate dinner. Then they needed to prepare breakfast for the next morning. By that time, it is almost sunrise. Every slave slept with the fear of not being able to wake up in time in the morning, and being whipped. They would have that same day over and over again. but sometimes they would get the day off on Sunday, and half the day off on Saturday. They would usually have a party on Saturdays. On Sunday, some slaves were required to go to church with their masters. Still others had a choice. Some owners had a church specially built for their slaves to go to church. They would hire their own preacher, or sometimes ask one of the better slaves to do it. They would teach the slaves at the church that they were lucky, and that god sent them to the earth to be slaves. But other slaves did not have the luxury of having days off.
